It’s that time of year again! Can you believe it’s already the beginning of a new school year? The back-to-school transition can be hard not only for students, but for substitute teachers as well. We found a Substitute Survival Guide from Education World, with all of the resources you need to prepare for the new year!
Peg Arseneaux, a former classroom teacher and long-time substitute in Connecticut, gave Education World the following tips for substitutes:
1. Arrive at your assignment early, especially if it’s the first time substituting for that particular teacher.
2. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the classroom.
3. Follow the plans that were left for you.
4. If you have questions, ask other grade-level teachers.
5. Keep track of which students finished what work, and leave it for the teacher to see when he or she returns.
6. Leave a full report of what you covered in the lesson plan for the day.
7. Make notes of student behavior, especially positive things!
8. Go to the teacher’s room during lunch and introduce yourself.
