With so many children in one spot, it is widely known that schools are some of the most germ-ridden places – and we are in the heart of flu season. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), elementary school children get eight to twelve colds or cases of the flu each school year, while older students are sick about four to six times per year. As a school employee, it is important to be aware of the threat of germs and to prepare accordingly.
Here are some tips to stay healthy this year (collected from CDC):
1. Ger the flu vaccination.
2. Cover your nose and mouth with the inside of your elbow when coughing and sneezing.
3. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If there is no soap and water available, use hand sanitizer.
4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth throughout the day as germs are often spread this way.
5. Hold your breath for a few seconds after someone near you sneezes.
6. Make sure you are getting a good amount of sleep each night.
7. Daily vitamin supplements are recommended to strengthen your immune system and to keep you healthy.
8. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are used frequently in the classroom (e.g. your desk, students’ desks).
9. Avoid drinking from the public water fountain. Bring your own water bottle or let the water in the fountain run for a few seconds before drinking in order to wash away germs.
10. Wash or disinfect your hands before eating and beware of lunch trays – they often carry a great amount of germs.
