Attention all Harry Potter fans! Here’s a fun Friday topic for your pondering pleasure. In today’s world, most teachers undergo several formal teaching evaluations every year. Can you imagine what teaching evaluations in the world of Hogwarts might look like?
Potter fans in the education industry are sure to appreciate this post from “The Lone Girl in the Crowd” blog titled: Hogwarts Teacher Evaluations by Albus Dumbledore.
If you really think about it, a handful of Hogwarts faculty members provide us with prime examples of some teaching pitfalls to avoid:
- Professor Binns uses a monotonous, long-winded lecture style which is certain to put any student to sleep.
- Professor Snape is notorious for bullying the students he doesn’t like as well as those who perform poorly in his class; everyone is afraid of him.
- Professor Trelawney lacks any measurable method of assessment.
- Professor Hagrid doesn’t communicate clearly and has been known to expose the class to dangerous creatures.
- Professor Lockhart lacks any knowledge of the subject he teaches.
- Professor Umbridge needs to vary her teaching style; reading from a textbook without application is no way to learn!
- Professor Slughorn shows blatant favortism and ignores the other students.
At the end of the day, if you choose to model your teaching off of any of the Hogwarts teachers, we urge you to lean in the direction of Professor McGonagall, Flitwick, or Sprout!
